Even with the rising rate of divorce, the liberalized attitude toward sex, and the common occurrence of „living together“ arrangements, most surveys have shown that Americans still over-whelmingly believe in the institution of marriage. But despite that belief, the basic structure and workings of contemporary matrimony are a far cry from those of its predecessors.
Today there are more and more families where both the husband and the wife work. There also seems to be a more equal sharing of the responsibilities of home and children. And there appears to be a radical change occurring in marital sex mores.
The couples portrayed in this book are average, middle-class Americans. They have one thing in common. Solid marriages, based on mutual love and respect, which have grown routine and boring. They all find, however, that they are capable of great flexibility and manage to put spark in their lives without sacrificing their marriages. Their solution may be shocking to some, but the men and women in this story find the open marriage concept to be a satisfactory outlet and a uniting force.
