At the Commonwealth Conference in London earlier this year,
Lee Kuan Yew lectured African leaders around the Marl¬
borough House table. If they wanted a “just solution” to the
Rhodesian problem, their countries would have to find the
discipline and durability for a war of attrition. The 150,000
white Rhodesians, even backed by 4,000,000 South Africans,
could not be invincible for ever. But oratory alone was not
enough. “In Southeast Asia, the Vietcong have demonstrated
that given the tenacity, the capacity, the will to slog it out to the
very end of time, even the world’s mightiest military and tech¬
nological power can be persuaded to negotiate a settlement.”
